  • Hello

I'm into buying a fan that can be PWM controlled to have a smooth way of controlling the speed of the fan in the bathroom. I was thinking about this Ruck EM 150 EC 02. On that webpage the manual gave me the information below.

If I interpreted some Googles searches correctly, a Shelly Dimmer could control this PWM-fan? But I'm in doubt if I need a Shelly Dimmer Gen3 or a Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3? The first one is more expensive than the second, but I don't notice big differences between the two.

I didn't buy any PWM bathroomfan yet, so if I would need another type of fan, that is still possible. Could also be another type than inline channel. But the "regular" bathroom fans mostly aren't PWM controlled as far as I see.

  • Both devices are NOT suitable: Shelly Dimmer Gen3 is a device for dimming mains voltage by trailing edge switching of the mains frequency (50 Hz). Shelly Dimmer 0/1-10V PM Gen3 delivers a DC voltage between 0 and 10V for control purposes.

The only Shelly device with the required features ist the Shelly plus 0-10V Dimmer. Unfortunately, this device provides a passive PWM signal. Thus, an additional power source (10V DC) is necessary. You may have a look at this thread:

  • Unfortunately, the PWM signal of Shelly plus 0-10V Dimmer is 500Hz. This seems to be too low for the fan control. But the „old“ Shelly RGWB2 is providing a 1kHz PWM signal:

The new Shelly plus RGBW PM does work with 22kHz, which is way too high…
