Shelly relay suddenly stops turning off

  • Hi All

I have a Shelly that controls the light in my garage. It's been working fine for probably nearly 2 years but yesterday suddenly it stopped turning the lights off.

If I use the physical switch attached to the shelly I can hear the relay engaging and disengaging and the app correctly updates to show that the lights are on or off... but the lights do not turn off.

This seems VERY odd to me. as I said I can hear the realy activating.

Is it possible that the relay has become defective and despite me hearing it activating it is still making a connection?

    Thanks

  • Sometimes, it happens that a relay contact has a permanent connection, Especially with consumers with high inrush current (e,g. LED lights) or inductive load (e.g. fluorescent lamps). Physically, a kind of spot welding is happening in the relay. Being keen-eared, you may hear a difference between a good relay and a relay with welded contacts, Another test would be to knock the Shelly on a table, which may break the welding and leads to a normal operation. But keep in mind that the contact is weak - it will never be as new…
