12V voltage range for Shelly 1 plus

  • I want to use a Shelly 1 plus in my van. The 12V can range from 11.8V up to 14V. I have read in the specs that the voltage must be stabilized. But what is the range the relay will work at? I sure hope it works at 14V as all other 12V devices can work at 14V.

  • I am using Shelly 1 relays in my camper van. The 12V supply can range from 12.0 up to 14.4V. This is the normal 12V range for 12V devices. I was just shocked to read that the Shelly relays need a stabilized 12V !! So does this mean it will not work in my campervan. Seems really a poor limitation as all 12V devices can handle a broad range of voltages.

  • A short glimpse in the guts of a Shelly actor shows us that the CPU and other logic are driven with 3,3V, stabilized by a step down converter from the 12V rail. The relay coil only is operated directly by 12V DC. The datasheet of the Shelly-typical relays gives a max. voltage for the sensitive types of relays of 20,4V; ordinary relay coils have a max. voltage of 15,6V. But the sensitive type of relay (larger coil resistance) is much more populated...

Thus, given the fact the battery voltage of a car should not exceed 14,2V, a Shelly actor can be operated directly with on-board voltage.
