Connect SINGLE MOMENTARY SWITCH to DIMMER 2

  • I am trying to connect the momentary switch to a dimmer 2.

I already do understand that the dimmer 2 will work (even without a switch) when the Brown =>L, Black => O and Blue => N have been connected.

I have succeeded to get the software connect to the dimmer and configre it.

Now, what I do not understand is the way the momentary switch shoud be connected to the Dimmer 2.

See attached fig 1: the momentary switch has been connected to SW1 (or SW2) and L.

However, on the Shelly Dimmer I do see 3x a L. Are these 3 L identical?? Are they in parrallel? And if YES, can I connect the momentary switch to a random L?

See also attached fig 3: the in figure, the momentary switch has been connected to SW1 (or SW2) and N.

So, for me, it is strange that in fig 1 the momentary switch is connected to L and in figure 3 to the N ???

Or can both ways be used??

  • Welcome to the forum!

    To your issue:

Are these 3 L identical?? Are they in parrallel? And if YES, can I connect the momentary switch to a random L?

The answer is: YES, YES and YES.

Or can both ways be used??

Yes, indeed. But switching between L and SW is recommended, due to lower switching current and lower power dissipation in the Shelly.

  • Okay, that clears things up for me...

What do you mean by "lower switching current" and "lower power dissipation" ?

Is there e safety issue on the switching current or dissipation..

I am working on the following hotel switch that I want to make smart....

All current switch boxes do have a neutral wire (which is not used for the moment)...

I want to install the shelly dimmer in one of the mount box....

    I do see 2 options:

    1. install Shelly in the left one (neutral+live available, black switch wire extended from the right box)?

The momentary switch on the left box can then be connected via SW1 and L. But how do I connect the momentary switch in the right box? SW1 and N?

    2. install Shelly in the right one (neutral + switch wire available, live wire extended from the left box)?

The momentary switch on the right box can then be connected via SW1 and extended L. Then connect momentary switch in left box via SW1 and L.

The black switch wires between both boxes are 1.5mm2..... Is that a problem?

It is the power dissipation in the Shelly case only. If activated by switch between SW and N (not push button), some 200mW thermal energy are dissipated in the Shelly. This is to avoid by switching between SW and L.

To your diagram: I suppose the switches have signal lights? This would be an issue for a Shelly!
