Shelly making "shhhhhh" noise

  • Hi,

Shelly devices are great but one of my Shelly 2.5 had weird behaviour last day, my roller shutter was repeatedly stopping randomly when opening or closing, and again 2 or 3 seconds later when commanding again for opening or closing.

I could connect to the Shelly and tried to modify network settings, wanted to update the firmware. But after taking into account new network settings, the Shelly does not work anymore. Could not even ask for firmware update.

When pluging the Shelly to power at wall (220V), I cannot see the red led blinking anymore at startup, and the Shelly is making a low noise like "shhhhhhh" continuously (my other Shelly devices do not do this small noise).

I tried to reset the Shelly by pressing the reset button for 10 seconds, but it does not make better changes.

Is there another way to reset the Shelly 2.5 ?

    Thanks for your help

I really enjoy Shelly devices !

  • Most likely, the electrolytic capacitors in the internal power supply of the Shelly are faulty. If applicable, open a support ticket and ask for a replacement!

  • Same here... Shelly2.5, works fine when connected to the external 3.3V power from USB Serial interface. But when its on main power (230V) it fails and make lots of noise. Looking inside the Shelly I find a couple of elco capacitors rated 400V, which is fine for 110-120V mains voltage, but not for 230-240V. When power is switched on, the voltages can peak up to 415V internaly. Which is fine for a couple of times, but eventually they will fail. I had this other mobile wifi AP (first generation Apple Airport Express), that one blew its power supply because of the same reason. Choices to cut costs obviously.

My Shelly2.5 needs to be replaced too. I did try to find suitable replacement parts, but these capacitors with that small of a form factor are hard to get. Its more expensive to order those than getting a new Shelly.
