Dimmable 2-switch system with Shelly Dimmer 2

  • Good day!

A newbie question about Shelly Dimmer 2 wiring. In my house I have one big room divided to two - living room and kitchen. Both have light setup done with two switches - can turn lights on or off from either side of the rooms - as described on the attached image.

For living room, i have an existing 3-way dimmer switch (push = on/off, rotate = dim) and one section from the 2 button 3-way switch (on-off) For the kitchen i have classic 3-way on-off switch and one section from the 2 button 3-way switch.

    Questions:

    1. how to connect the wires to Shelly 2 dimmer so that both switch locations remain working for living room? I assume I need two Dimmer 2-s to achieve dimmable lights for kitchen?

    2. should i replace the switches with some other types?

    3. is it possible to use dimming with the physical switches after Dimmer 2 is installed or is it only possible to dim using Shelly app, etc?

    Thanks in advance!

    J

  • At first: Welcome to the forum!

    To your issue: You‘ll need:

    2 pc. Shelly Dimmer2

2 pc. 2-gang (momentary) buttons (to be mounted instead of the 3 way switches)

The two Shelly Dimmer2 should be placed at the location of the 3 way dimmer switches, cause there is a neutral wire. One wire of the two each between the 3way switches is freed, due to the fact, buttons are used. This free wire is used to get the „lamp wire“ to the place where Shelly Dimmer2 is installed.

In the diagram only one button is shown - please add a second button in the same manner! This schematic is used twice - both for kitchen and living room.
