Finally got it sorted out.
Had to power it off and on again; push the reset button until it flashed (about 10 seconds); then run the URL above. Came back working on a reboot of the device.
Perhaps somehow it left the factory like that,,,, dunno

Did you get this to work? I have 6 that have exactly the same condition.
When I connect to them with a web browser all I can see is a json view.
