Monitor NC reed for open condition

  • I purchased a Shelly 1 Gen 3 to monitor a reed switch so I can program it to notify me when the condition changes. I have a box for packages and I need to know when that lid has been opened (or if it has not been fully closed). Looking thru the documentation I find this is possible with this switch, but I am having difficulty configuring this switch to achieve the outcome.

I have powering with 120v (US) for testing purposes. I do have a 12v supply I can swap in case that makes a difference.

My reed switches have yet to arrive so I have configured the dry contact with a twisted pair of solid copper to complete and break the circuit. So far no matter what configuration, setting, or pinout that I set will give me any "state of change" indication.

I need some help getting going here.

    Thanks in advance, J

A “dry contact” is a relay - it is an output, not an input. The Shelly can switch on or off, but cannot “read”.

If you operate the Shelly with 12V or 24V, you could try connecting the reed contact to SW.

This setup is not permitted at higher operating voltages because the reed contact could then come into contact with this dangerously high voltage.

  • Thank you for your reply; so I may not have the correct Shelly device, or this isnt an intended function? I did try a 12V setup with one wire in the SW and the other in the "I" (input) but I gather this is also not the correct config.

  • This is basically a suitable shelly. But I think you still have trouble understanding the right connection:

You can connect SW with + as a test. Then the Shelly relay should switch -> I + O are connected.
You can read out the status of SW. You can also set whether the relay should switch with SW or whether you want to trigger a different action.

  • You are correct, while I understood the electrical side of the equation, I was struggling to understand the relay side combined with the application settings. I was able to get a 12v setup and dry contact relay to function as desired. I did watch a video on someone who set up a reed switch and placed it in SW and the 12v negative or ground terminal to decipher its condition prior to the execution of the contact open/close function.
