More than 220 watts with the shelly dimmer

  • Hi Shelly community!

I would like to install a Shelly dimmer for my table light, which consists of four halogen lamps with 60 watts each (therefore a total of 240 watts). Since the Shelly dimmer only allows for a maximum of 220 watts for halogen lights, I was wondering if I can still install the Shelly dimmer by simply sacrificing those 20 leftover watts or if the lights would break down or overheat the dimmer.

Switching out the lamps is not an option in this case. I would gladly only use 220 watts of the lamp instead of the 240 watts but I'm scared the Shelly dimmer would overheat or simply not work. What's your advice on this? :)

    Best regards.

Hi @matty , welcome to the forum. :)

There is a reason for a manufacturer to indicate a maximum load.;)

If you exceed this maximum load, you have to expect that a defect will occur.

In your case, the turn-on spike could be the bigger problem. It is your decision and your responsibility whether you test it.

    Good luck.:)

I have had 6 halogeen spots on it and it. Literally melted inside my wall.

It did not turn off anymore and I smelled a burning smell. When I opened up the switch I saw a component insed the shelly literally red of the heat. I was lucky I saw it in time. This could have esqulated very quickly.

It seems that the thermal overprotection did not work in my case.
