Where is it possible to download the firmware?

It's possible. I flashed is with ESP EasyFlasher.

And what are the benefits?
I presume, for any other ESP8266 devices the tasmota-fw would be the best choice because it's not possible to change the used I/O-Pins with the stock-shelly-FW. So just installing the frontend would be a useless goal.

I flashed it on an ESP8266MOD D1 and built a cheap wlan switch with it. With this switch I control my light in the bedroom, because I don't have a light switch near the bed.
