A few days ago the Shelly app seemed to crash to a black screen, and now it loads, but all I see is the same black screen. Is this common? Will I need to uninstall and reinstall the app to fix it?

Can you Provide us some Device Details? like the OS Version, Device Type etc..
Yeah may try to reinstall the Shelly Cloud App please make sure your OS Version is Compatible with the required Shelly Cloud App OS Version for your Device.
If the problems persist, it is best to contact Allterco Robotics LTD.
The best way to do this is to create a ticket at: https://ticket.shelly.support/open.php
What helped me was restarting the phone simply and continue experimenting.

It is an iPhone 6 running OS 12.5.5 which is the current update for the phone. As I indicated it crashed as I was using the app. This was after using the app for a few months.
